One-day Master Class with Kazuya Ishida

Born into a family of potters in Bizen — one of Japan's six ancient kiln cities — Kazuya Ishida trained under Jun Isezaki, a Living National Treasure, before spending years in the UK and establishing his own studio. His work has since traveled the world: from Oxford University kilns to galleries in Paris, New York, Hong Kong, and beyond. At the heart of his practice is Raho (螺法), his original Spiral Technique — developed on the electric wheel and rooted in an unexpected source: breakdancing. Etching lines into a cylindrical form and manipulating it as it spins, he creates dynamic spiral patterns that evoke the rhythms of shells, tides, and geological shifts.

In this one-day master class at Clay Commons, Ishida-san will share traditional Bizen techniques, guide participants through the Raho method, and offer insights into the philosophy behind his practice.
